Hi Everyone!
Just a couple things I wanted to remind you all about. The Tutor/Student Recognition Picnic is on June 12th at 1:30 here at the Palos campus. Please RSVP by Monday if at all possible. If you do need to let me know a little later, I'm sure we can fit you in, but I want to make sure you'll have enough to eat! Please feel free to bring family or friends. It should be fun!
The next couple weeks I'll be hosting our first summer tutor training. I really wasn't sure if anyone would sign-up, but right now we have ten people scheduled to attend.
Another exciting development is that Moraine has chosen its new "One Book One College" book. It's Studs Terkel's "Working." The college web page about the book is http://www.morainevalley.edu/working/ . Some of you might remember when we last participated in this program with the "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time." Moraine does a great job of offering fun and informative sessions throughout the year that are connected to the book and it's themes. I think this year would be a good year to participate in this program. I will be putting together a book club for anyone who's interested and ordering the book. I will also try to find an audio version for those students who might have trouble with the reading level of the book.
Classes start again June 8th for those of you who tutor on campus. The open tutoring labs will start the next week to give us time to advertise to the students.
I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Have a wonderful weekend!

Dates for June Training and Tutor/Student Recognition Event Set
Hi Everyone!
You're the first to know! Here are the dates for the next new tutor training and the Tutor/Student Recognition Picnic. The picnic will be on June 12th starting at 1:30 here at the Palos Hills Campus. That's a Friday. We have half-day Fridays in the summer, so we'll pretty much have the campus to ourselves. The picnic will be held in the area with our umbrella/picnic tables. I'll send out a map and further details as we get closer to the date. Everyone will be welcome to attend, including families!
June 2nd and 9th from 9-3 will be when the new in-person tutor training will be held. I'll be letting everyone who expressed an interest in the in-person training know the dates this week. If you know anyone who might be interested in attending the training, ask them to complete the online application on our web page, http://www.morainevalley.edu/Literacy/literacy_program_application_form.htm , and I will get back to them as soon as I can.
The Secretary of State sends out an online newsletter every month. If you ignore the grant reporting stuff, they have some very interesting resources listed. Here's the link to that newsletter :http://literacy.kent.edu/~illinois/networknotes/apr09NN.pdf . Check it out if you like. I think you might find some of the information useful.
I will be on vacation from May 10th until the 18th. I'll be working on matches this week, so if you are waiting I will contact you before Friday.
Thanks again everyone for all your hard work. Without your time and energy there would be no program! Please let me know if you have any ideas or comments on what we could do better.
Have a great week!
Megan
